The Hero That Lies In My Neighbour

Most of us have neighbours. They can be kind, inviting, noisy and more. My neighbour can be described as noisy, but I think she’s more than that…

It’s happened three times now. Every Friday and/or Saturday night, my neighbour starts to play ‘Hero’ by Whitney Houston. Loudly. So loud that I can’t hear myself think. So loud that I’m forced to put Beyoncé on to block it out. Don’t get me wrong – I love a bit of Whitney – but at the volume my neighbour puts it, I’d rather pass.

But that’s not the irritating part – she starts to sing.

I don’t like to be mean and will never say this to my neighbour’s face, but she can’t sing. It’s understandable that she would want to screech at the top of her voice along to Whitney with a somewhat indescribable passion. However it’s one of those things in life that you should keep to yourself.

Although, it is a little concerning. That indescribable passion she sings with must have been caused by something. And the song is always ‘Hero’, so maybe she has suffered a tough break-up but still loves her ex? Maybe she’s even lost a relative? Or maybe she’s just feeling emotional for a random reason? Whatever it is, there is definitely some emotion she needs to get out. So next time I see her, I’ll ask how she is – just casually – and try to analyse the ‘fine, thanks’ as much as possible in order to identify her mood. (Because it really can tell you a lot about a person.)

I just wish she could express her emotions in some other way like… not singing. (Or maybe, just so she can get the message, I should crank up the volume when playing ‘I Will Always Love You’. Mischievous.)

  1. I had a neighbor, who was partially deaf, and loved Celine Dion’s My heart will go on, from Titanic. Every…freaking…day…for a month, I heard that song, over and over, as she attempted to sing along. Oh…so glad I moved…
